Cummins: Check the Health of Your Engines Anytime, Anyplace

Given that engines are the main focus of heavy equipment maintenance, it only makes sense to stay connected to them with the latest telematics.

That’s why Cummins has announced that its connected engine solutions are now integrated with some of the top telematics providers including Topcon, Trimble, Saucon and TelliQ.

Cummins Connected Solutions offers two telematics applications for off-highway machines; Connected Diagnostics and Connected Software Updates. Both improve operating performance, boost asset utilization and uptime, increase efficiency and reduce costs.

By wirelessly connecting engines to enable continuous monitoring and diagnosis of system faults, site managers can make informed decisions on whether to stop machine operation or continue to the end of the shift when fault codes appear. Diagnostics also enable managers to understand how long they have before an issue is likely to cause a breakdown or critical failure. This maximizes uptime by making sure the correct parts, tools, and technician can be slotted into the maintenance schedule and resolve issues with minimal disruptions.

Connected Software Updates deliver over-the-air engine software updates and product enhancements to Cummins Performance Series engines from anywhere, using integrated telematics systems and over-the-air connectivity services. This eliminates the need for on-site technician visits typically associated with this task. ECMs can be calibrated while the equipment is on site, using as little as five minutes of stationary downtime.

Cummins recognizes that a number of Cummins engine customers have their own telematics capability and has designed their digital applications to integrate with customer systems as well. This ensures that the OEM and Cummins telematics feeds can be accessed on one web portal via a single interface. OEMs that don’t have a telematics system of their own, can select one of the telematics service providers that Cummins is working with to gain easy access to all the J1939 public data to manage the engines in their machines.

Quick Data: What’s Happening with Used Wheel Loaders?

There’s the usual cast of players when looking at auction results during the past 12 months.

Caterpillar dominated the wheel loader auction pricing for the 12-month period of Sept. 1, 2020 to Aug. 31, 2021, according to Randall-Reilly’s Top Bid auction price guide.

In total, there were 428 wheel loaders sold at auctions tracked by Top Bid during this time. (This does not include any units that sold for less than $5,000.)

To make this a bit more interesting, we’re including two charts that highlight which wheel loader models generated the highest prices on the auction block: one featuring the top Cat models and one showing the top non-Cat models.

For the Cat models, a 2019 Cat 966M with 730 hours had the top spot, selling for $370,000 at a Ritchie Bros auction in Denver, Colorado on Mar. 3.

The Cat wheel loader chart also shows a curiosity, especially in this day of equipment shortages: a 6-hour, 2021 Cat 926M that sold Aug.10th at a Ritchie Bros. auction in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Equipment World

Looking at the non-Cat wheel loader chart, auction prices start at $196,000 and the models tend to have more hours an average of 5,533 hours, compared with the 1,036-hour average of the top Cat models.

Two Volvo models garnered top prices: a 2018 L180H with 6,241 hours, which sold for $196,000 at an IronPlanet sale on Jun. 6th and a 2016 Volvo L250H with 5,702 hours, which sold for $180,000 at a Ritchie Bros. auction in Fort Worth, Texas, on Jul. 20th.

Deere models made the most appearances on the non-Cat chart, ranging from a $165,000 2016 Deere 624K at Hunyady Auction sale in Meadville, Pennsylvania, to a 2017 Deere 844III with 7,632 hours that sold for $142,500 at the Ritchie Bros. Orlando sale in February.

Titan Machinery revenues grow 35% in Q2

Titan Machinery says its revenues grew 35% year-over-year during Q2 compared with the same period last year, rising from $303.5 million in Q2 2020 to $377.6 million this year.

David Meyer, Titan’s chairman and CEO says he was “especially pleased with the improved performance of both our construction and international segments. Our construction segment pre-tax income grew 105% versus the prior year and our International segment pre-tax income increased by $0.9 million, and on an adjusted basis by $2.4 million, versus the prior year.”

The CNH Industrial dealer says equipment sales were $272.7 million in Q2, compared to $202.7 million during the same period last year. Parts sales rose from $61.5 million to $65.3 million.

The company’s construction segment rose from $77.7 million during Q2 2020 to $80.9 million, driven by increased equipment sales partially offset by lower parts, service and rental revenue resulting from the firm’s divestment in Arizona.

The company released expectations for the current year, and expects its agricultural segment to be up 18% to 23%, construction to be up 2% to 7% and its international segment to be up 27% to 32%.

“Our inventory turns are continuing to trend upward and we are receiving inventory shipments that are allowing us to surpass our revenue targets,” says Meyer. “While supply chains remain tight, we are confident in our ability to drive growth through the second half of our fiscal year and, as a result, we are raising our modeling assumptions accordingly.”

Drone, Software Firm Alliance Takes on Large Construction Jobs

A Doosan Group division has joined with automated analytics provider AI Clearing to provide detailed jobsite data for large-scale construction projects.

The partnership takes advantage of Doosan Mobility Innovation’s hydrogen-powered drones, reportedly the first-of-its-kind. Capable of staying airborne for more than 2 hours, the drones alleviate the need for multiple batteries and launch points required by lithium-ion polymer drones and stay airborne four times longer, says AI Clearing. And when power does get low, the hydrogen tanks can be quickly replaced, allowing the drones to be running again in three minutes.

Not only are the DMI drones capable of being in the air longer, they can also carry more payload, says Taco Engelaar, chief commercial officer, AI Clearing. “There’s a huge synergy with their drone hardware and our software,” he says.

For its part, AI Clearing says its artificial intelligence-powered system leverages automation in comparing drone images with schedules and designs, providing teams with full visibility into the work that’s been completed and spot any discrepancies to design.

While drones are commonplace on jobsites, contractors are not getting much value from the data obtained by them, Engelaar says. “The digital surface models don’t really mean much,” he says. AI Clearing’s software uses what he calls a fully automated progress tracking solution that analyzes the drone data along with project design data.

The partnership is targeting large construction projects with this joint effort, including roads, bridges, high-speed rail, solar farm and port construction.

Companies are “increasingly demanding longer flight time,” says Doo Soon Lee, CEO, Doosan Mobility Innovation. “This is the case for sites difficult to access in one flight, sites where efficiency is significantly reduced with battery drones due to large scale, or when you want to perform multiple missions using long flight time.”

Joint AI Clearing/DMI future projects could involve near real-time reporting as the drone flies over a site, something that now takes about a day because of the data processing and analytics involved. “We’re looking at ways to actually install our solution directly onto the drone and then directly transmit our progress analytics in real time,” Engelaar says, taking advantage of the drone’s heavier payload capabilities.

The joint effort will also focus on R&D with an aim to enable edge computing for construction progress that was previously impossible due to limitations in computing power and the distance capabilities of most drones, AI Clearing says.
